It is always easy to find someone for major works such as changing the whole kitchen carpentry but finding someone for minor work is especially hard because of the “root of all evil”, money. The profit margin vs the time spent might not be worth it all the time.
Including us at Singapore Handyman, we do not accept all type of carpentry job as beside money there are also other things to consider:
- The result: as mention above the word minor can be scary. Since you are not building everything from scratch, there would likely be a mismatch in the final finishing – veneer, laminate or stain colours can differ and we would never know what was the original materials used.
- Time: Minor work does not equate minor time spent in most cases. As per point one the time spent to find a solution to match the finish, add to that the time spent to troubleshoot and come up with a solution could simply mean a new build can be done faster. The only thing saved is the material which can be costly too but to be fair labour cost is usually the higher driving factor in Singapore.
- Mindset: Using the above 2 points, we can see for example a whole new kitchen cabinet work which cost 5 digit during Reno but a simple minor work which can cost a few hundred would be deemed as too high. As such, it is common for us to prefer to do the easy but higher paying job than the harder yet lower paying job.
Do we do minor carpentry work? Yes we do. However do not be surprised if we turn down your job and inform you that it is better to just get it new.
